I forwarded this to a young guy running for congress in a deep purple district. I have been telling him to run to the left and stay out of the middle. His primary candidate is middle, nothing to distinguish himself from. I hope he reads your column!
Read the writing on the wall "yound guy running for congress". I'd ask what possessed him to do such a thing and if he isnt just attempting to emulate the present congress then he might be worth his salt and if not, don't bother because we've had enough of the same.
"Back from 40 years of politicians who told us we had to accept less while the rich took more." They transformed themselves from greedy, capitalist, monopolistic money grubbers into "job-creators" who epitomised the American Dream and, of course, "deserved" their billions because they sold us false meritocracy. What a snow job. They killed their competitors, suckled tens of $Trillions of public money, destroyed labor unions, and privatized anything they could get their hands on, from hospitals to prisons. Extraction. Like colonialism, it is pure extraction. The old neo-liberal warmed-over liberal/progressive/moderate ideas will not get us where we need to be. We need to change the rules of the game. Start by giving power back to Labor; pass the Federal Job Guarantee now. Then make the tax system more progressive: Tax rate similar to 1946-1981. Pass new anti-trust regulations and break up the massive monopolies, especially in tech. Rewrite campaign finance laws so that rich people's right to speech does not supersede mine. It's the start of a platform, but not one I see many places. Keep up the good work. Your manifesto is a good starting point. Unrig, dismantle, and then rebuild an economy that works for the people.
Hello Eric... Economics is always a 'Zero Sum" Game... Neo-Liberalism has resulted in the Greatest Wealth Disparity in Modern History as the Oligarchs Suck-Up more & more...
The Democratic Party lost its way and became just another institution of corporate corruption a long time ago right along with the Ivy League and celebrity culture the Party sucks up to. And I hear people say defend "democracy" who have no clear vision of anything let alone democracy. These battles are important and must be woven together with a unifying vision. It really isn't about democracy or socialism or some other form - it's about the substance. People threw out the Republicans of the Gilded Age and the Democrats of this Neoliberal Age because they violated Universal Human Rights. If all you stand for is a set of policies you are just feeding on the symptoms of the problem. The disease is the elitist view of human beings as varying in worth. The most powerful possible response is in equity. And the beacon of human equity is Universal Human Rights.
Wonder if the DNC has taken note that David Hogg the ousted dueley elected VP of the national party is financially supporting and has his boots on the ground campaigning for Ms. Behn?
If Behn wins today, Jeffries should immediately relinquish his role as Minority Leader. However, a loss is a loss even if it’s really really really close. A win is the earthquake we’ve been waiting for.
We need a new label for what Corbin is talking about. Something rooted in “Investment”. Use the language of capitalism to show how what we are doing is building capacity for the future.
This isn’t traditional “progressive” or “populist” politics. It’s something we haven’t seen for a long time.
Let’s also be careful with the “socialism” label because that has been co-opted to mean “communism” and is somewhat toxic.
Maybe it’s “public capitalism” where the voters participate in creating competition in the market.
I am in a small town on the Mississippi in mid IL. Our Dem Party chair does not want to criticize the party. Perhaps she believes that since IL is blue we need not worry.
But our town is Red, 40% of school kids are on reduced price lunches because the local employers, hospital, manufacturers, don't pay a living wage. How do we push for change?
This is great news! The "so called" middle is too compromised by big business interests and has lost touch with what really matters to regular people. Sweeping changes are needed to make life better for everyone, not just consolidate the power and money into the hands of the few. Look forward to your grassroots reporting! Go Aftyn go!
I never believe the city people who insist that there is no way a progressive can win in so called “Trump country” (which is just another expression of contempt towards people in “flyover country”).
I’m from WI - another state where Bernie won every county but one in the 2016 primary, but then went for Trump.
We (WI & TN) live in former Populist Party country - Eugene Debs, etc.
WI had a long lefty tradition with fighting Bob LaFollette and the Progressive Party as well.
Anyone who blows off “Trump Country” (read Hillary) does not know the history of our country.
Yes Corbin, YES! Tennesseans are leading the charge, and we in Texas are only a step behind trying to wipeout this state's cancerous right flank. Fingers crossed for Aftyn's success!
There’s a long post below showcasing how I’m not a neoliberal, but to the point you’re making:
A neoliberal looks at all problems and says, “The market will solve that.” Just because they’re wrong doesn’t mean anyone with any policy solution whatsoever is necessarily right, nor even more right than the neoliberal status quo. It’s not all as simple as neoliberal bad, anything else good.

Wealth causes poverty.

Sending prayers up for Aftyn today!!! 🔥🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
Exciting!

Thoughts?
I just voted for Behn this morning. My hopes aren’t up too high but even a possibility is something instead of nothing.
Back when it was Jim Cooper here he was WAY to the right of his district. He might as well have been a Republican.

Progressive populism is the only electoral way forward.

She did great. Trump and MAGA are failing. Onward. Tennessee has the talent and history to turn itself around.
