In Wisconsin we had the CCC building parks, the Soil Conservation Act enabled farmers to change to contour farming, the rural electrification program brought everyone outside of town electricity, the WPA building swimming pools, bridges, etc.
There is NO REASON (other than they don’t want to) “the Parliamentarian” that this couldn’t be done today.
THEY JUST DO NOT CARE ABOUT WORKING PEOPLE - and they despise rural people.
Hi Corbin, I'm the Communications Director for Rural Urban Bridge Initiative. I'd love to talk to you more about our work and the policies we are advocating for as part of the Rural New Deal. We'd also love to feature your perspective in some of our upcoming work. Any way I can get your contact information to set up a meeting?
I am reminded of a pipeline company coming to our beautiful Texas Hill Country in the late 80's trying to run a huge pipeline over the Edwards Aquifer threatening our water, destroying the scenery, but most of all using eminent domain to take our property.
The people rose up as one. The very same people who are now solidly Republican. They understood the goals of these greedy business people. At a public meeting, the company spokesman tried to sell it as good for us because of the jobs it would create. My mother stood up and said "yeah, ditch digging jobs, unskilled and low pay. And then y'all are gone and our land is ruined."
I am happy to report they killed that pipeline route. But, like Sauron, greedy business men who only know how to take and give back nothing never stop. They are back with better lies, better marketing and help from the internet. Look at what these jerks have done to Austin.
And now there's a new threat/organizing opportunity from data centers trying to locate in rural areas where they can suck up water and electricity on the promise of jobs that will be only temporary.
Just read on NPR that Franklin, IN (outside of Indy) where a giant campus was to house the computer hardware that powers Google's internet business needing to rezone 450 acres --residents weren't having it! After coming together Google pulled its data center proposal. People cheered.
If folks need to be reminded of the New Deal watch Ken Burns The Roosevelts on pbs. Quite the
reminder of what the nation accomplished during the Great Depression and then on the eve of
WWII to become armed and ready.
I'm hopeful that folks will stay engaged and alert to our Constitution to keep us all alive.
Similar has happened in several Indiana towns and cities as presumably Investment entities try to pull the same BS with "Data Centers" as they did with "MegaWarehouses": "Build them and they will come and make us Richer by obtaining discountes and bribes and allowances from the Taxpayers for Power, Impact Fees, New Job stipends.
However, these "Data Centers" are long before they are warranted, and if warranted, they will have a short life-expectancy, few jobs, and a big, hard to erase footprint for Future generations to rehabilitate.
Plus, they are suggesting that they will require 1M Gal of Water everyday for cooling. Whose ancient aquifers can abide that? Enormous Power needs which attract the support of Electric Utilities Profit-nose. They won't and, if needed in the 1st place, will require less and less every 30-36 months owing to the evolution of both Software and Hardware improvements.
And, then the Bottomline. AI is NOT ready for PrimeTime! I work with it, so see everyday that here is an Improvement, there is a big gap in the path.
The Great Leap Forward was only 6-9 months ago. Big Refinement 3 months ago. And, already releases by other Major Players, llike Samsung, with quantuum reductions in Effort and Requirments.
By analogy, our 1st wooden cart wheels have been invented and refined to something akin to the wagon wheels of the Prairie Schooners. Hi-Tech bike and cycle and auto wheels are still ahead.
But, without fail, we seem to become vulnerable to the elite's divisive speeches, they're empty promises of improvement; they use new communication technologies to sell themselves as cultural icons. They appeal to those who have felt marginalized, victims of real or imagined impoverishment.
Critical thinking suffers, crime rates rise, educational opportunities are diminished, and the whole cycle falls to the oligarchs.
Vision and Unity ARE more powerful than fear and hate. But they MUST be taught and become a part of a solid foundation that is incorruptible.
"Watching my generational inheritance get stolen by the wealthy and well-connected." I worked in Corporate America for 35 years and scrambled in the merger/aquisition game which consolidated hundreds of small companies into three giant conglomerates in the industry where I worked. And each time I didn't make the cut and had to search for another job, I started at the same salary I had years earlier. Working for white men also taught me a lot about being a woman in a man's world. I finished raising my kids and remained in tact. Instead of getting angry, I decided to teach for the last fourteen years, where I could let my students learn the truth through historical literature. We are all one. Corbin: you are right about everything you wrote this week. The country has only been this divided once, which lead to a Civil War. The current divisive war has taken place over the last fifty years without our even knowing it, and the rich got richer as they convinced us to hate each other rather than them.
We need "Real people running to represent real people." This is key, and if Trumpers ever realize he couldn't care less about them, maybe they'll see that there are people out there running for office who do. I just hope it isn't too late.
Do not kid yourselves, Tennesseans. Over half of CA is just as Rural as Tennessee or KY or IN or MI and many other States as well. And often with even more separation.
Remember that the idea Gov Jerry Brown got dinged for with the nickname "Moonbeam" was for his initiative that CA and hopefully some other Western States launch communication satellites to Save the State lots of wasted Time & Money by providing the States tele-meeting capability for their agencies, their colleges and K-12 school systems the ability to share Prof/Teacher Talent among remote campuses.

I agree wholeheartedly in everything you say here. THIS is the way to lead—- These ideas.

Exactly and inspiring.
So well said. The divide isn't red vs. blue, it's top vs bottom.
let's meet in The Big Middle, where most Americans are, and come to consensus on practical solutions to our common problems

You really nailed the crux of it. WI is letting Microsoft build one near Lake Michigan.
I couldn't believe it. Of course, the farmers and local townspeople had no say.
People in Adams County are fighting solar panel farms for Utilities--not as bad as
data centers, but it is taking land used for agriculture.
I agree--AI is not ready for primetime. How will AI be contained, how will the
average person know who or what bot is invading their electronics? Life in the 21st
century will probably spin out of control until group think decides this isn't a good
outcome.
